The Question Isn't If... The Question is Merely When.
05.22.05 (6:28 am)   [edit]
I was recently chatting with someone who was pleased as she could be to tell me about two new music purchases she had made. I giggled when she mentioned them with exclamation points at the end of her sentences. I too can relate to that kind of excitement. For someone like me, there's *hardly* anything better than music shopping. I love just holding the new, plastic-wrapped gem in my fingers and walking around the store, showing it off, before making my purchase. It's a courtship of sorts and it's one of the truly simple peasures that someone like me relishes in.

But I digress...

Now... two days later, I've learned that said individual with the new music has yet to even listen to either of her purchases! I find this utterly shocking ~ not because there is anything wrong with it, of course ~ but simply because it is just so far outside the scope of my own behavior. (You say tomato, I say eggplant). When I purchase new music, I can be seen practically running to my car to slip my newly found love into the CD player for its first listen, my fingers fumbling with the litany of "anti-theft devices" that have been placed on nearly every square inch of the disk for the sole purpose of keeping me out. (Actually, now that I think about it, that may be a good topic for another time. How many sticky bits of barbed wire do they really need to put on CDs to keep people out, anyway?) I'm sure it's a character flaw on my part, but I simply cannot wait.
Waiting... it just seems wrong, somehow.

Of course, with the advent of the internet, we hardly have to wait for anything these days. We're all very used to instant gratification and I'm sure such things have only helped to shorten my already truncated attention span.

*pause*

What was I talking about? Oh right....

*wink*

I suppose, in the end, it all comes down to personal preference, doesn't it? I know I've spoken here before about what it means to me to find or be given new music. Such discoveries and gifts bring me more pleasure than just about anything else. I become lost in those moments and once there, never want to bring my head back above the water; drowning in such feelings seems like a perfectly acceptable way to go. I throw myself into the music... and when I fall in love, I obsess over the song(s) for hours, days, sometimes even weeks - playing it over and over until I hear it in my dreams. (Admittedly, I have a problem).

Yesterday, I received the gift of some new music: Two perfectly lovely songs, from an equally lovely person . And I'm in love. I've listened to (nearly) nothing else since: both songs on repeat in an endless loop of just them and me and us. I've closed my eyes and heard every layer of the music, letting myself get lost in the intimacies of the voice, the lyrics and all they could mean. When I'm ready to share my new love, I will, but in the meantime, I can only say I'm glad I didn't wait for this feeling. I'm glad I didn't let the music linger for a couple of days before allowing myself to fall into it. Of all the things I am, a fabulous waiter is not one of them.

And to the person doing the waiting: You're crazy girl... but I'd not have you any other way.

And to the person doing the sharing: Thank you, thank you, thank you. You're seeped in gentle generosity ... but I'd not have you any other way.

*ahem*

I think it fitting that I should be checking in first...

I am probably the world's worst waiter. A couple of things went into the putting off of listening to my new gems....

firstly... I just happen to drive a rather amazing car that, at present, does not house a cd player. When I am in my car, I am lost in my youth amidst the countless cassette tapes filled with memories and moments I treasure.

Secondly, the internet, and a well versed Trespassers William fan I know have provided a bit of that music in the interim, making at least that particular purchase no less exciting, but less pressing in my mind in that I have it here and playing at a moment's notice. Of course, I'm also still lying in the sound of my blog. ;)

And finally, for the trump card.......

There are two little reasons running around in my house... they have curtailed my instant gratification tendencies when it comes to music. All it takes is one F bomb wafting out of the speakers and you learn really quickly to choose your new-music-listening moments much more carefully. I realize there are no tell-all stickers warning me of the lyrics on Trespassers William or Damien Rice, however, generally, this is why said behavior has developed. *Giggle - the old 'I have kids excuse' - hahaha!

*heads off to put cds in stereo...

pssssst... I'm listening to TW as we speak, so phooey!

Oh dear. I came to this thread thinking, how interesting, lindy is as crazy as me when it comes to new music. But now I've read her excuses I can see I'm worse than her. Oh dear oh dear. The thing is, it is quite common for me to buy a CD and then not play it for days. In fact, I confess, I own a very few CDs I have never listened to. Weird enough for ya? I think the reason is that, for me, it's more about the enjoyment of the purchase, and the enjoyment of the owning (and therefore the *theoretical* access if and when required), than the actual listening. I know that is weird, but it is nonetheless so.

Also, I see that my experience of and enjoyment of music is considerably less intense than yours, and now I feel a bit left out. :-(

i am an instant gratification person as well... but those "little reasons" like crazy girl mentioned, of which i have one, do change your habits a bit when it comes to new music and movies. my lil' reason is 6 and very quick to point out that "mom they said a bad word!"

Excuses... Excuses!

Clearly, you're just a nut. And no matter what you say... the people who read this blog have your number, Missy.

Don't feel badly about your music experience being less intense than mine... I'm a little loopy.

However...

You own CDs that you've NEVER LISTENED TO AT ALL???

You might actually be MORE crazy than Lindy.

*wink*

Aaaah. I am without "little reasons" and I'm a bit of a potty mouth, so it works. :)

Thanks for the comment, dear.

Yes, but only one or two. Yeah, I think maybe two. Unless you count the hundred I inherited whn my collection was combined with Miss Behvaiour's collection, in which case it is, well, hundreds.

oh oh oh. i agree. nothing smells quite as good as a new cd cover and nothing gleams quite as much as the underside of a new cd. and nothing sunds as good as the first ten seconds of newness.
kindred spirits!

Feel better?

Yikes! Are you sure it was good idea to mentioned that on *this* blog of all places?

*Gets feeling lindy may never live this down*

On the other hand, at least unopened vinyl has the potential to be worth something to collectors should you ever feel the need to sell. Opened but never listened to CDs, on the other hand, just don't have quite the same collectability, if you know what I mean.

Hahaha. Yes, I know how to tap dance.

I'm no Gregory Hines, but I can do it and make it look quite cute. Haha. Reminds me of a post from the past I may fish out... :)

Hey you! What gives? Sorry for the delete. But I've remedied the situation... although I decided to give you a new name given a recent convo you had with Lindy over on her blog. Hope you don't mind. I think it suits you.

Take care...

Well, I shall take that as a compliment and an honor ;-). I understand why you had deleted me since I have neglected to visit and speak with you, but I too wish to remedy situations. How have you been? I'd actually enjoy speaking with you more in the context of music and writing, I feel that we once began to but never truly got anywhere given the childish banter which became so easy to find in our conversations...or rather flirtations...lol.

Hiya! Glad to see you've found your way back to the living. As for the delete... a moment of (in)sanity... nothing more.

But...

Flirtations? Surely you jest.

Be good!

Let's see... firstly, I admire the way Chris guilted you into putting his link back up.

Secondly, I love your particular choice of titles for said link. Perfect.

Third, I suspect 'childish banter' is preferred infinitely in comparison to speaking in 'greater context' but then... what do I know. I'm just an old woman who shoots pretty straight and makes good on my intentions for the most part.

Muwah ha ha haaaaaa

My goodness. Not only are you a fairly straight shooter, I'd say your aim is dead on.
