One-hit wonders
04.18.05 (4:36 pm)   [edit]
I was in a store last night, wandering through DVDs and my eyes rested upon Flashdance… yes, Flashdance (I realize I am dating myself) and I began to hum the theme song, ‘What a feeling’… a one hit wonder, one of many from a mostly forgotten block buster soundtrack. I thought of all the one hit wonders I’d heard in my life and was astonished at the number of songs that came immediately back to the forefront. I imagine it is debatable as to whether these artists are true one-hit wonders as some of them have gone on to do other things in the music industry, such as hits in countries outside the US, duets that became hits, penning hits other artists sing, etc. But I measure a one-hit wonder in simple terms… name another tune the artist sang… one that everybody else knows too (Hits from the UK don’t count!). Here are the ones I remember off the top of my head…

What a feeling – Irene Cara
Bette Davis eyes – Kim Carnes
99 red balloons - Nena
Heart and Soul – T’Pau
Black Velvet – Alannah Myles
I’m too sexy – Right Said Fred
Cars – Gary Numan
My Sharona – The Knack
Play that funky music – Black Cherry
Obsession – Animotion
Knock on wood – Amii Stewart
In a big country – Big Country
Take on me – Aha
Hot hot hot – Buster Poindexter
Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm – Crash Test Dummies
Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Deep Blue Something
I want candy – Bow wow wow
Brandy (you’re a fine girl) – Looking Glass
Funky town – Psuedo Echo
Rock n Roll pt. 2 – Gary Glitter
Ring my bell – Anita Ward
Turn the beat around – Vickie Sue Robinson (had to look her up)
I love the night life - Alicia Bridges
More more more – Andrea True
I know what boys like – The Waitresses
Electric slide
Macarena

I know I am missing many. Can you think of some I didn’t? And bonus points to the person (Shadowmusic) who can come up with how Kim Carnes and Irene Cara are connected with their one-hit wonders…

(though I am now realizing a very obvious hit by Irene Cara that might eliminate her from this prestigeous list after all...hmmmm)

The American charts must be a very very odd place. There is *no way* that Aha, Nena, the Crash Test Dummies, or Right Said Fred are one hit wonders.
To wit:
Aha: Crying in the rain
Nena: Reich mir die Hand
Crash Test Dummies: Afternoons and coffeespoons, God shuffled his feet.
Right Said Fred: Don't talk let's kiss.

That said, I'm pretty impressed that you can get that many. I could never have come up with that list.

Yeah, Irene Cara did "Fame," didn't she?

True, but does a number one constitute a hit? I wonder... Foxy Lady, Purple Haze... he definitely had several songs that people can reel off as opposed to... say... Alannah Myles (who?) exactly.

Frankie Goes to Hollywood... good one! Which reminds me of Dexy's Midnight Run... :)

Yeah, I'm with you on Crash Test. At the very least I'd have to include God Shuffled his Feet. Love those guys. But perhaps Juni has chart data for back-up?

That's why I added the disclaimer about the UK charts... and all European charts for that matter. I believe Right Said Fred had more then just two hits according to the Brits and the Germans. As for the rest of this list you offered up... I think you'd be hard pressed to find any Americans who would recognize them... you see, apparently, the music sun rises and sets over here. Not sure 'Reich mir die hand' would fly, you know? Though Lindy may have heard of it... :)

Juni (or juni's reps? I'm confused at the moment), I take your point about the difference between the UK and the US charts, especially on the Nena front. But did Aha *really* pass all of America by except for Take On Me? Aha released 8 albums. It's not like they were a flash in the pan.

I believe their next best effort was 'Hunting high and low' (or at least that is what I remember), and 'The sun always shines on tv' stands out for me, as does 'Cry wolf' from Scoundrel days, but then, I wouldn't call me 'typical'... I've never run into anyone who has heard more then just take on me'. Since I do not have Juni's expertise, I shall endeavor to find out...

Okay, adding my two cents...

Thomas Dolby - She blinded me with science
'M' - Pop musik
The Vapors - Turning Japanese
Tommy Tutone - 867-5309 (Jenny I got your number)
FLOCK OF SEAGULLS!!! - I ran

I soooooo raided VH1's one hit wonders on line.....

hahaha, nice blog. One hit wonders, they may be one hit, but we will remember them forever! Also, these are the ones they make all the money off of - collecting royalties is a great job. lol
