Music To My Ears...
02.28.05 (4:33 pm)   [edit]
A few months ago, I received a package in the mail that contained a lovely gift. A CD by a band called Azure Ray. Of course, I listened to them right away, and although I knew they were something special at the time, life intervened, and I found myself setting them aside for a time. Days, weeks, months went by before I finally felt ready to visit them again and now that I have, I can’t seem to stop listening to this wonderful band from Georgia. Their style is not entirely unique, but they seem to possess the wisdom to recognize what they do well and stick to it, without the constant forayws into uncharted territory. Indeed, each song on each album, in some ways, feels very much like the next step on the journey towards perfecting that sound. Anyway, I won’t go on and on ad nauseam about them. If you’re at all interested, click the link, (above or to the side). They have some samples and descriptions on their relatively well put together site that might be of interest. I'll end simply with a thank you to the person who showed me the way.

However, if I might jump subjects for a moment, or "birdwalk" as my 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Heinz, used to say, this constant rotation of one band in my CD player, coupled with a recent conversation with my good friend shadowmusic about what he was listening to, made me realize that it’s been a little while since something new landed on my doorstep. So… with that in mind, I ask you two questions:

 • What music are you listening to these days?
 • What’s your favorite CD of 2005 so far?

i just bought Tom Waits' album, 'real gone.' it was 2004... i haven't been big on this year's music... perhaps an australian band, Thirsty Merc's self-titled debut - i suppose you can slot them into the australian indie genre...? it's a bit light, but i'm feeling lighter these days. :)

speaking of good aussie music (i spread the word, yo), i think you'd really like this australian band called George -- they also have a few side projects, the main being Elixir -- their albums 'Unity' and 'Polyserena' are awesome for a lazy sunday afternoon.

yay, jenn. y.a.y.!.

Rinna, darling. I love Tom Waits, but have not bought Real Gone, yet. I need to put it on my wish list. Thanks so much for the suggestions. I will be checking them out as soon as possible.

Thanks for stopping by and saying hello!

Grrrr! I am most jealous of your recent purchases. I *must* have Morrissey for myself. :)

I just discovered the Be Good Tonyas. I'm in love. Frazey Ford...I could listen to her forever.
I just listened to Kinnie Starr-Sun Again for two days straight.
And one of my friends was in a band called Coyote Project. I'm in love with her voice as well.

But then, Rufus Wainwright can do no wrong.

I have a 3 song sampler cd from this band Carbon Leaf.. the first 2 songs The Boxer and Life Less Ordinary are just fun. I am going out this week to get one of their cds. I am also listening to Lanterna's latest a lot.

I haven't gotten anything new yet this year. I haven't made it through my list for 2004.

Hmmmm.... sweet girlie voices? I'm intrigued. I must admit, I'm a sucker for sad girls. Azure Ray falls into that catagory. I can't wait to check out your suggestions!

I *really* need to get a hold of the new Lanterna. What's the title? Is the Boxer a remake of the Simon and Garfunkle song?

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'm a sucker for accents and girly voices. I can't help it. I have to get CD's for my plane ride and I want to check Azure Ray out.
Good music makes me want to cry. It's so intense and feels like food, that I never want it to end!

The new Lanterna is Highways... excellent.

No, the Boxer isn't a remake... kind of a celtic rock song. Bouncy. If you go to http://www.carbonleaf.com you can hear stuff from their new album. The Life Less Ordinary, but not the Boxer. It is just fun music.

Music these days: As j-flux knows, I'm currently catching up with Death Cab for Cutie and related projects (i.e. The Postal Service), and tend to be a couple of years behind in CD buying. So I probably won't find my "favorite CD of 2005 so far" until 2007 or so. :-)

I did just add Lanterna's "Highways" and three Azure Ray albums to my wishlist at:

Thanks for the good recommendations, everyone!

Music is a must for me on any road trip. Perhaps it's time for you to invest in an iPod or something similar. :)

That's a great way to describe it. If you end up digging Azure Ray, let me know... There's more where that came from.

You are very welcome. You were and still remain the first on my list when it comes to sharing new and amazing music. I can't help but to not think of you first when I find something that moves me. I'm glad you've found some great people who you can share your passion with and who do the same in return.
