Apparently Some Things Are *NOT* Priceless After All...
02.21.05 (7:43 pm)   [edit]
I know some of you were a little distressed earlier in the week when you didn't have a chance to bid on the famed "Dogs Playing Poker" painting that sold for a whopping $590,000 as part of Doyle’s annual Dogs in Art auction. (I'm soooo there next year!) To that end, I saw recently where jazz legend Charlie Parker's sax sold at auction for a very respectable $260,000. Ok. I realize Parker's coveted alto sax didn't fetch (har!) quite as much as the "Dogs Playing Poker" painting, (c'mon! It's dogs... playing poker!) but its recent sale, coupled with that of the card playing puppies, got me thinking about what music related memorabilia I might bid on, if given the opportunity, and money was no object.

So... here's my question:

If you had unlimited resources and the sky was the limit in terms of what you could spend, what music related item would make you rush to Sotheby's to *ahem* blow your wad?

Just for the record... I meant *wad* as in cash. Leave it to April to get all dirty on me! ;-) You're crazy, girl.

I don't know why I haven't come to your blog before? Or if I have, why I forgot it?
And why would I forget it?
Gosh, I'm all excited now!

Oh and I would buy the violin Ginette Neveu would have played if she had made it to America.
And anything having anything at all to do with Muddy Waters' first guitar.

Whoa! Excellent choices!!

An aside: Once, a few years ago, I had the opportunity to stand in a box above the stage at The Kennedy Center and watch Itzhak Perlman practice alone on stage for a performance later that night. He had no idea that he was being watched by above. Needless to say, it was incredible. What I wouldn't give to have that violin.

Thanks for the comment!

I would give ANYTHING to have been there.
Even this short story makes me feel like special. I mean, to be able to see something like that in solitude...

Oh, it is a treasured memory. One of the guides there snuck me in and we spent about 15-20 minutes listening. The ultimate fly on the wall experience. I didn't get to see the performance that night, but I still feel like I got the better show.

Thanks so much for your comments. :)

As a sound engineer I always felt the part before the main part was the most intriguing.
I could say so much on this subject though. So watch me shut up!

I'd get something Beatles-ish for my pal Antal who adores them and I'd buy Nick Beggs. Not his guitar the man ;)

Well... the real thing is always better than the instrument, Alms. Hands down.

How nice of you to think of your buddy! :)

Miles Davis' artwork, and something Zappa-ish for DH.

For me, anything Beatles.

-sigh-

I tried and tried to think of *something* I'd like to own that belonged to a musical god... alas, I have failed. I can not think of something that can be bought. I can not think of some *thing* I would want to own...

If money was not an issue and I could have ANYTHING I wanted...

I'd buy Scott Weiland.

I like a woman who knows what she wants. :) Personally, I'm not certain who I'd purchase as my own personal love slave... but your comment gives me something very pleasant to chew on for awhile. :)
