Just An Old Fashioned Love Song...
02.13.05 (9:21 am)   [edit]
Ok. I know it's been awhile, but let's make a list, shall we?

The other night I was in the car with someone who turned on the radio to a program I had never heard before. The host was named Delilah and, as far as I could tell, she spent her four hours on air playing nothing but easy listening love songs attached to various sappy love stories. Some of the callers were genuinely touching and I'm sure all were sincere. The music, of course, wasn't my particular brand of tea, but it got me thinking about love songs and what makes a good one. And with Valentine's Day just around the corner, I figured why not!

So...

What are your favorite love songs? As *was* the custom on this blog when I was posting more regularly, I'll complile a master list once we're all finished, but in the meantime I'd like to know two things?

What is/are your favorite love song(s)?
Why do you love it (them)?

Tag! You're it!

I'm a progger, so I have the same problem with mainstream love songs... never seem to get to me the way they should... I think my favorite that folks would know is "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel

Oh! Even though Peter Gabriel is a genius, I'd love it if you didn't limit it to ones folks would know. I'm much more interested in music most people don't know.

Share.

My current favorite love song is "The Luckiest" by Ben Folds. It just skips the regular bullshit and stays completely real. It's a bit on the sad side, though.

Well... the sadder the better in my book. Thanks for the suggestions... I was sort of expecting a hardrock ballad from you. :)

I'd have to agree with Ian on The Luckiest...its simply amazing. However, another song that fits quite nicely into this is Lovesong by The Cure...only because I love the Cure so much and it was written for his wife as a wedding present since he didn't want to get her diamonds. haha.

How are ya Juni?

Maze! *smooch!* So glad to see you stop by! I love The Cure too, so they would definitely be on my list.

How goes it?

I've heard Mrs. Delilah before, too.

Love songs aren't high on my list of things to listen to these days.

I was kind of surprised by the whole Delilah phonemon myself. Like I said, easy listening isn't really my cup-o-tea, but I was interested when a pal of mine told me she had one of the top rated syndicated radio shows. Lot's of sappy folks out there who enjoy benign music apparently.

Anyway, thanks for the comment. Maybe your fave heartgrabbing tune will come to you later. :)

Oh, I think that's a GREAT reason, Childish. Sometimes it's not the song so much as the memories that are attached to it. Thanks for the comment! :)

Well, the song My Girl makes me smile, I sing it to my daughter all the time and it was the song my dad and I danced to at my previous wedding.

Hmm... For favorite love song, I'll go with The Softies' "It's Love." Short acoustic song with twee sweet vocals. Many thanks to Juniperflux for introducing me to that band! :-)

Several of those are very good choices... I particularly love "Since I Fell For You." That song has been redone a few times, but the version by Lenny Welch always manages to kick me in the gut. Good stuff.

Thanks for the comment! :)

I love the fact that I am not familar with several of your choices ~ it gives me some new musical avenues to explore. Who knows, maybe some other folks who are lurking around here will find something new as a result of your suggestions as well.

I also love the "love it cuz she loved it" reason that you listed. I could do an entire list of songs that fit that definition alone. (Of course, I'd have to change 'she' to 'he' though).

Thanks for the comment.

Oh my stars! Stopp the presses! You mean the man who is the king of all music lists, the master of music classification, the grand sultan of song sorting picked a tune by a band that *I* showed to him as his favorite??? Has a greater compliment every been flung in my direction? I think not.;-) Seriously, that's a good song... but I would have chosen "Love You More" as my Softies track. The memories and emotions that surround that song are too numerous to mention.

Thanks for the comment, kiddo!

"Love You More" by the Softies is a good song, but I like their song "It's Love" better... maybe because it's janglier/perkier? Anyway, "It's Love" is possibly my favorite love song, and I'm including lyrics here:

IT'S LOVE
by The Softies:

you're a sure sign of heaven above
and you're past the line between I like and I love
but I'm trusting you to always be mine and be true

and there's no reason we can't call it what it is
it's love it's love, it's love it's love

there's a good chance any time of the day
I'll be thinking of you in the nicest way
I haven't slept in days and I know that I'll feel this always

and there's no reason we can't call it what it is
it's love it's love, it's love it's love

I can't help but tell everyone
this is the best thing I've ever done
I owe you everything
you turned my winter to spring
this must be love

Climb On (A Back That's Strong) by Shawn Colvin
Hallelujah by Rufus Wainwright
By Your Side by Tiddas
and
If You Were Mine by Billie Holiday

But there's alot more than that.

Oh my...

Let me tell you a secret. There's something about Rufus Wainwright.... I swear I can see his lips moving when he sings. His voice is so evocative to me. I feel I could devour him.

I've always pictured his mouth when he sings.
I could use his breath when he sings, as my own.
