Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory...
07.16.04 (2:55 pm)   [edit]
In my opinion, one of the most moving parts of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath occurs just before the Okies begin their harrowing trek along Rt. 66 towards a new, (and what they hope will be better), life in California. In this particular scene, the family must choose what items they will take with them on their journey. Because there are so many family members going, and so little room to carry their belongings, hard choices must be made, and at one point, the children are told that they must choose two items that they can keep. Only two. Once the decisions have been made, everything else is burned in the front yard as the family watches to ensure that no one else becomes the owner of their memories. It's both poignant and brutal.

I think we've all had these types of conversations with either other people or at least with ourselves. You know... the whole "if you were stuck on a deserted island, what would you... " line of questioning. Further, I find how people answer this type of question to be infinitely telling, because the real question here is not what would you take along, but rather, what can’t you live without. Naturally, there are the practical among us who take along matches and a palm-pilot, while the romantics bring along a picture of their puppy and the stuffed elephant won at the county fair by their boyfriend in the 8th grade. Both types of responses garner scoffs and questions. And both answers often make us rethink our own.

I came to this line of thinking as a result of a recent houseguest’s astonishment at my ever-growing collection of music. Even I have to admit that it’s gotten a bit out of hand. But when faced with the option of parting with some of it, I start to exhibit symptoms of some yet unnamed mental disorder: My palms get clammy… I find myself fidgeting… my voice shakes. Soon I’ll develop an uncontrollable twitch just under my left eye. And yet… I can’t help but wonder, if I could only choose two… what would they be? Two CDs, let’s say. What music means so much to me that it would be what I'd if I could only have two to take with me on my journey towards a new (and hopefully) better life? To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure this is a question that I can answer. But that won’t stop me from asking you. :)

I think you know where this is going…

So… if you had to go through your music collection, and could only pick two CDs, and the rest you had to give away or burn or throw at young children as they bicycled past your house, what would those two be? (And no, smarty pants, you can’t make two mix-CDs). Let’s hear it. The music you can’t live without. I promise to *try* to keep the scoffing to a minimum.

hello

well, it really is a tough question, but the first cd would have to be our favorite shop - the style council
the second would be either pato fu mtv ao vivo, a excellent brazilian band, or treasure, from the cocteau twins(it would really depend on the moment i would be, right now i guess it would e cocteau twins)

bye

Difficult question...so many to choose from...ok here it is, sappy as it may be: Jimmy Buffett, cause who can't help but feel better when Margarittaville is playing...and, even though I don't own this disk, I would keep it anyhow because it reminds me of a true friend from HS days and beyond named JJ...Jive Bunny and the Master mixers....hehehehe. I love ya babe. Keep up the good work...oh, please ignore my misspelled words, some things never change.

Darn, I was going to make two mix-CDs. :( Do double CDs count as one or two?

Hmm, in that case, I will go with Smashing Pumpkins- Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and Nine Inch Nails- Pretty Hate Machine. Not at all an easy choice, though. Good question, by the way. :)

I LOVE Cat Stevens! :) It would be a tough world without some of his music! GREAT choices!

Ha! Oh my stars! I haven't heard of or thought about that group since... well, since a VERY, VERY long time! :) And yes... you are a dork!

(But I still love you!)

I would have to say Indigo Girls' double CD: 1200 Curfews (Live) as my first pick. Second pick is a bit tougher, but I'll say Road Apples by the Tragically Hip.

Hmmm... this would cruel and unusal punishment. My 2 cds would be Peter Gabriel's Passion and Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes.

The very though of this is just sadistic, juniper. LOL

I'm going with Karma by Delirium and Slow To Burn by Vanessa Daou.

My insides hurt now. :-(

MMm if I had to choose. Now here is a perplexed question within itself. Would these be music cds or video cds containing pictures and music of friends, relatives, lifes everyday doings. I often think what is happening to the past as the future continues to condense memories on to now a cdr that can hold 1,000 of pictures. GS had a point in making this real. Of course now I know Im not gonna keep Barny and Pat boone's greatest metal duet.
2 MUSIC CDS - Twisted Sisters - Stay hungry
KISS - Revenge
Thanks for making me think
Great Blog

i guess... and i mean guess...
"more b.s." by bree sharp
"its all in your head" eve 6

because those are the 2 cd's that shead my soul.

I read this blog a few days ago, screamed, and logged off. I've been stewing over this and can't pick. I like the one person's idea of making two mixed cds if I were stranded forever with only 2 discs. I still can't narrow it down, but if I absolutely must, I would take Bauhaus- Flatfields, and Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark. Oooo, that was hard; I changed it three times. OK. Done.

PS
Cat Stevens and JJ are synonymous.

Marvin Gaye- Greatest hits

Argghh... such a horrible decision. I could probably get by for a while with "Recipe for Hate" by Bad Religion and "Graceland" by Paul Simon. They sort of balance each other out.

I'm enjoying the variety of answers!

I use music to fit or alter my mood, so choosing only 2 is really difficult. I think something soothing and something rocking. Now if i could only narrow down which ONES... maybe James Taylor? that's soothing and bouncy... no, maybe Dvorak's New World Symphony, perfect for sunsets (or sunrises)... and for the 2nd one... Queen's Day at the Races.. no, Night at the Opera... no, Zepplin! No... ye gads.

I hope we never have a fire, I'll burn up trying to decide what to take with me!

Heard the question a few day ago from a friend and been able to think of my answer.
First:
Dramarama, "Live at the China Beach Club" Can't do without it.
Second:
Space, "spiders" for the times I need a pick-me-up.

Good Question
