"Ronald Reagan is dead. I wish it had been President Bush instead."
06.16.04 (4:01 am)   [edit]
Ok. Before you start sharpening your pitchforks and lighting your torches, let me just go on record as saying that the above quote cannot be credited to yours truly. Rather, this decidedly tasteless anti-Bush slam comes from former Smith's front man, Morrissey. As many of you have no doubt heard by now, this was Morrissey's way of letting a recent Dublin audience know that former US President Ronald Reagan had died. According to this article:

“Thousands of fans at Dublin Castle, in Ireland, cheered when the ex-Smiths frontman made the announcement that the former American president, who had battled with Alzheimer's Disease, had passed away… an even bigger cheer followed when Morrissey… then said he wished it had been the current President, George W Bush, who had died.”

Undoubtedly, many of you also know that I am not a fan of our current President, but even I know that this particular remark was not only in bad taste, but also just plain stupid. Apparently Morrissey, who has, to say the least, been out of the US limelight in the last several years, is now the subject of quite a bit of venom from this side of the Atlantic. According to The Manchester Record , the story on Morrissey’s antics was viewed over 500,000 times in 24 hours after being linked to on The Drudge Report. Further, the article goes on to state that a record number of American’s have contacted the paper to express their outrage regarding the incident.

Again… stupid.

Of course, Morrissey isn’t the first musician to open his (her) mouth and promptly insert his (her) foot. Over the years, many, many musicians have pulled stunts and said things that left their fans and foes alike scratching their heads as if to say, “um… huh?” In fact, in response to a recent post, Brogonzo and Kurtmaddox sparred back and forth regarding some of their favorite truly bad moments in music history. You know, those incidents that all parties involved would likely spend great wads of cash trying to get cleaned up, if it weren’t for the mountains of free press that such things create. Kurtmaddox (and RedTigress) even went so far as to suggest that this is a question worthy of further pursuit. And I must say that I rather agree.

After all, as a wise person recently told me “it is human nature to split our time between lamenting our own flaws and finding flaws in others.” So… let’s use this time to point our fingers happily at others and giggle unmercifully at their misfortune, shall we?

Yes… it’s time to list the most outrageously stupid things ever said or done by a musician. Sort of a “what were they thinking?” of music, if you will. The top things that made you shake your head and think, “man, I hope he fired his agent.” As usual, there are no rules to this game save that I will hold my own comments back until you have finished unleashing your wrath. Additionally, I think we’ll leave Mr. Morrissey’s remarks off our list. Clearly, his idiocy is already well established.

And with that… let the games begin.

Hey, how about Axl Rose trying to start an onstage fight with Kurt Cobain? That was pretty dumb. Oh, and then claiming he was going to make a new Guns record called "Chinese Democracy."

Axl is not exactly the king of wise decisions. :)

In step and quite similar to Mr. M's comment at the top, how about when the Dixi Chick's singer went on stage and made her anti-Bush statement? She's a country singer, you'd think she'd have enough sense to keep her mouth shut for her bible-belt fans.

I know eminem isn't ashamed of this, but his whole mopy fued is rediculous and low. Not to mention his whole fag thing with elton john.

It takes all kinds...even in the world of the celebs. I'm not surprised when they say/do dumb shit.

Morrissey was never happy about anything anyway. LOL I still like a lot of his music, though.

Hmm... How about Oasis saying they were going to be bigger than the Beatles. Or the Beatles saying they were bigger than Jesus Christ. Something along those lines anyway.

I can't think of anything offensive off the top of my head, but one singer who always says strange things that don't really make sense is Gord Downie from the Tragically Hip (http://www.thehip.ca). He is one strange dude. But we canucks love him. For a great example, if you are into the music downloading thing, search Kazaa or whatever for "killerwhaletank" and download the Killerwhaletank" version of "New Orleans is Sinking". That's the song in the middle of which he usually tells stories that make no sense or tests new songs. Go! Download it!

Eve 6 once played "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls at a concert. But that was just funny. And they also said clearly that the band officially does not support masturbation.

Absolutely. I still like his music, and I don't necessarily disagree with some of his politics, I just think that was a dumb move. Then again... there's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

LOL I think you're right about that...well, me, if I were famous I think I'd be upset about bad publicity (but that's probably one of the many reasons I'm not famous LOL). I guess they're all media whores. LOL

And to be completely honest...I hadn't wiped the dust off my old Smiths discs/Morrissey discs but reading this made me remember I had them and want to listen to them again...so I can see where they're coming from.

Kinda reminds me of when Sinead O'Conner tore up that picture of the Pope on SNL. Bad taste? Yes. Publicity stunt? Well, she did get a lot of attention for it afterward (not necessarily good...) People make stupid mistakes all the time, and the media is usually what 'fans the flames' out of control.

Joe Pesci was on SNL the next Saturday. He said he would have smacked her upside the head if he'd been there during her "performance." I would have watched that on pay-per-view.

Morrissey making a statement like that was the only way he was going to get any sort of news coverage as most people prolly thought he was dead.

I seem to remember Terence Trent D'Arby back int he late eighties predicting becoming larger than Elvis or more popular then the Beatles - I think it may have been Elvis. Either way, After the Hardline according to TTD... does anyone remember the next album? Exactly. One less noticable one was Pink at the MTV awards... approaching the podium to accept an award and putting her hand to her head and uttering, "I';m to drunk for this." - she lost some fans and a lot of respect that day - left a bad taste in my mouth. Drink your ass off and show up with a hang over - live the lifestyle, fine. But don't freakin brag about it like a dumbass. All that does is tell the world you are trying to convince YOURSELF of something. But alas, I digress. Juniperflux... I'm definitely coming back more often. I like how you express yourself.

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times, comparing yourself to JC/EP or the Beatles is the kiss of death for any musician. Not only are the chances of such a comparison being viable quite unlikely, but it also tends to evoke a very strong and not so positive reaction in most people.

Very cool comments! Thanks.
