So... Do You or Don't You?
05.24.04 (12:22 pm)   [edit]
I found this article interesting not only because it claims that recent polls indicated that the threat of legal action has done little to deter European internet users from downloading pirated music, but also because I had a very similar conversation with a group of teenagers (13-15 years old) who echoed these same sentiments. In fact, one boy that I spoke to said that "the chances of getting hit by lightning are greater than the chances of being sued by the music industry." (Note: he said this as he clicked on him mp3 player which, according to him, boasts hearly 3k songs). Meanwhile another girl said, "until they make the system harder to beat, I'm still downloading."

Hmmmmm...

The same article also states ""In the US, there has been a small decline of about 5%." But generally it appears that the law suits haven't done much to deter file swappers. (It's sort of like the death penalty for music ~ not only does it suck, but it's not actually a deterent either!) Meanwhile, file swapping remains completely legal in Canada... oh those crazy Knucks!

So anyway.... now I'm curious.

Do y'all still file share or what? And if so, why? And if no, why not? Please note that I am not an informant for the RIAA or any such group ~ at least not yet.

I don't. But the only reason I don't is because I don't have time, which is not a very good reason at all.

We don't anymore, though we used to. Unfortunately, we had a computer crash that wiped out over 2,000 tracks :(

I miss the unusual stuff that you're never going to find in the store anyhow - it's not like I'm downloading today's star of the week! For now, I just get alot of my new music from the library, but they don't increase the collection real fast. I would LOVE to be the music selector for the library system!!!

I still download occasionally, when I want to check something out before buying the cd. However, many artists are now posting clips on their websites that you can listen to so I go directly to their websites instead.

I used to but I do not anymore. I listen and respect my government. What they tell me to do, I do. I salute their order and carry on smartly.

I used to download only the music i couldnt find in the stores anymore (Deleted titles or very old foreign music).
I stopped downloading because of all the spyware and adwares within the files and the servers that had file sharing...
I wish there was a place where people could still obtain deleted or world music in a more honest way (on both sides of the spectrum).

I'd say it's a pretty good reason. Sounds like you are filling your life with all sorts of worth while endeavors. Speaking of which, I plan to reply to your e-mail VERY soon. :)

Ya... I'm with you there. Besides, a lot of the bands I love are not found on the usual search engines.

If only it were so simple - my library system is so large it's steeped in procedure, especially when it comes to hiring. Oh well.....

Aaaaah... the joys of red tape. Well... you know what they say, if you can't join 'em, beat 'em! :)

I believe in "test driving" things before I purchase. I will download an mp3 to see if I like an artist/group before I purchase the cd. I have downloaded things that I've been searching for and have been unsuccessful finding in record stores.

I don't believe in ripping off whole cd's from the web...and besides, my ears have discriminating taste. MP3's just don't retain the same quality of sound which an actual cd contain, so that's yet another prompt for me to seek out the artist/group for their cds if I've decided I would like to add them to my collection.

I agree with your philosophy. But then again the truth is that much of the music I listen to isn't really available for swapping.

Thanks for the comment! :)

Well, what I think is really funny are the broadband commercials that talk about the benefits of being able to download movies. As far as I know, there's still no legal way to download movies to one's computer.

VERY good point. Clearly downloading is a reality that some people plan to capitalize on.

Thanks for the comment! :)
