Darkly Beautiful....
05.02.04 (4:35 pm)   [edit]
I recently received an e-mail from a pal regaling me of all his recent musical purchases -- which for the record -- I am sufficiently jealous of. However, in his e-mail he jokingly made the statement: "I just can't get enough dark music with female vocals." Now... as we all know, the funniest jokes are the ones that are true. And the truth is, I couldn't agree more. Dark music (which can be defined any number of ways ranging from dark lyrics to slightly gothic arrangements or undertones) with female vocals might very well be one of my favorite genres of music. I love all kinds of music, but there are very few times in which one cannot find a CD by Love Spirals Downwards, Stoa or Claire Voyant in my CD player.

Of course, these are just a few bands that come to mind. This is a genre whose list of artists is indeed plentiful. So, having said that, (smile, dork) let's make a list.

Our topic: Dark music/female vocals. As always, eventually, I'll be sure to stun the world with my own list, but in the meantime... you first!

Chandeen
claire voyant
azure ray
a few btfbg songs

I'd not include stoa in this mix, but I like her too.

Hey, sorry this is late, but I wanted to throw these NOFX lyrics in when we all were talking about overrated bands. I think this song is all about the key to becoming an overrated band:

Please Play This Song on the Radio
NOFX

We wrote this song, it's not too short, not too long
It's got back-up vocals in just the right places
It's got a few oohs and ahhs
It takes a little pause
Just before I sing the anthem

Please play this song on the radio

Almost every line is sung on time
Almost every verse ends in a rhyme
The only problem we had was writing enough words
But that's okay, because the chorus is
Coming up again now

Please play this song on the radio
Please play this song on the radio

Right about this time
Some shit head will be drawin a fat fuckin' line
Over the title on the back sleeve
What an asshole!
So Mr. DJ I hope you've already made your segue
Or the FCC's gonna take a shit right on your head

Can't play this song on the radio
Can't play this song on the radio

Sorry for the foul language. It's art, right? -- Ian

Thanks for your list... although, I think some stoa songs can be snuck in here ~ even though technically they are a neoclassical band.

What first came to mind was Concrete Blond.. Neco Case's song "Pretty Girls" might work. I am blanking on others right now... but I am sure I can scrounge up a few more.

Girl vocals & dark music. Hmm... One of my standbys is Delerium. I listen to Siouxsie & the Banshees, Switchblade Symphony, Xymox (some female lead songs), and now my mind is blanking out 'cause I'm at work. And it's Monday. And I don't have the personal well-developed indie archive. And by the way, I remember you said you'd burn a cd or 2 for me over a year ago. After reading about the 40 bands that I must listen to on this blog, I'd love a compolation from you. :-) If I think of more, I will add another post.

Haaa... well, 2 years is about my turn-around time. :) Actually, maybe you can send me a list of the bands you would like (or at least any that come to mind), and I will make you one with those plus a few surprises. :)

Definitely Evanescence. I would also include Tori Amos. She has some pretty dark lyrics at times.

Oooo. Yeah, especially Tori Amos' version of '97 Bonnie and Clyde off of Stangle Girls. Haunting and Creepy!

I can't believe that the first band I didn't think of was Romeo Void. But there it is - popping into my head just now.

For those interested in a list of artists who make dark music with female vocals, one place to start is here:

i guess i don't really consider alanis "dark" but then i suppose some of her subject matter is.

in general, i think its up to your interpretation. i'm flexible. :)

Unfortunately, lead singer Suzanne Perry left LSD a couple of years ago. Ryan Lum (the other half of the band) continued with a new vocalist and new name Love Spirals (original, huh?) but things were bever really the same.
