The guy shaking the hand of the other guy, who's on fire, seems to say something about modern acceptance of destruction, or something. Another one I like, for reasons I couldn't really explain, is Monster by R.E.M. It's a blurry stamp image of a tiger or something on an orange background, but for some reason the strangeness and simplicity of the image are representative of the entire album. posted by: chicalookate (reply) post date: 03.29.04 (7:52 am) I have a whole book of album covers. I will have to go home and check it out to see what gems I can recommend. There is also a used record store in town that always has a great window display of records. One album that always comes to mind, but one I have never heard is Herb Alpert''s "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" with the woman coverd in whipped cream. posted by: irishred (reply) post date: 03.29.04 (12:15 pm) The Beatles Abbey Road album posted by: dumblondegirl (reply) post date: 03.29.04 (1:25 pm) Always liked The Eagles Greatest Hits Cover:

I will puruse my collection to give you a more definative favorite cover. posted by: DarkMood (reply) post date: 03.29.04 (3:56 pm) I like Iron Maiden's album covers. It pulled no punches as to what was inside with the music. But even more so, was the hidden grim reaper some where on most of their albums. It's one of those fold out ones that has some kind of cryptic story board cartoon inside- freaked me out when I was younger but i couldn't stop looking at it. posted by: intheshadows (reply) post date: 03.29.04 (7:54 pm) covers to consider: The Rolling Stones: Sticky Fingers This cover created a lot of controversy and has been the subject of numerous urban legends. Pink Floyd: Darkside of the Moon Instantly recognizable. Belle & Sebastian: Tigermilk: I have always found this cover intriguing. The image is intimate yet silly at the same time. Great blog. posted by: lynne (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (2:18 am) I have always liked the cover to Terripin Station by the Grateful Dead. No special reason why. I just like it. I have also always liked that one album cover from the cars with the part of a woman's face by a steering wheel. I think her smile is just so awesome that the album cover always makes me smile too. posted by: juniperflux (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (6:18 am) Reply to: chicalookate Well.. pull out that book and give me some suggestions! :) posted by: juniperflux (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (6:18 am) Reply to: irishred Damn you!! GREAT suggestions! I couldn't agree more with the B&S cover! posted by: juniperflux (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (6:20 am) Reply to: lynne Wow! I hadn't thought about The Cars, but you're right, that cover is a classic. It actually reminds me of another one that I will have to post when I compile all of this. :) Thanks for the comment! posted by: juniperflux (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (6:21 am) Reply to: KRAZEDONE Aaaaah... DD :) Great suggestions! Thanks! posted by: jenxer (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (8:44 am) I've seen more album covers than I actually have. Lots of goodies are listed. But I am partial to black and white. I love all Bauhaus album covers as most of them are odd black and white photos, but my very favorite happens not to be black and white. My all time favorite is Bauhaus - Swing the Heartache. Speaking of the bauhaus style, I have got to also mention Nitzerebb's Belief cover; it's so artistic in a sterile kind of way. Love the Cars covers too though - just for classic reognition and retro femininity. As a child, I my favorite cover to dive into was definately The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. posted by: Michael (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (10:25 am) I LOVED the European SCORPIONS album cover. Then again I was a 14 year old boy. http://www.rockdetector.com/artist,7800.sm posted by: chicalookate (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (11:02 am) Here are some bad covers someone compiled... http://porktornado.diaryland.com/albumcover.html More GOOD album covers... Counting Crows: This Desert Life (I have the kids book this illustration comes from) Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes... simple, but lovely. The Who: The Who Sells Out (the beans make me gag) Bjork: Homogenic... kind of creepy Toad the Wet Sprocket... most of their covers work for me. especially Fear and Coil I am sure there will be more later. posted by: david (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (2:28 pm) of course there are a few that have been suggested that i am unfamiliar with, but if i had to name one, it might be rem's murmer cd. when i was a kid, it always reminded me of the south. posted by: juniperflux (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (3:52 pm) Reply to: jenxer Hey ~ you know I mean CD covers too, right? Please don't think I'm refering only to sleeves that wrap around vinyl here. :) Great suggestions, btw. posted by: Just another guy now (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (4:13 pm) Cland of Xymox - Medusa This album pretty much opened my eyes to stuff I never knew existed, so it will always be a favorite. I wish I was yours. posted by: chicalookate (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (4:43 pm) Reply to: juniperflux The books won't work for this one... but if you do cheesiest album covers I got your back. posted by: chicalookate (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (4:46 pm) A couple more... Jane's Addiction: Nothing Shocking Meatloaf: Bat Out of Hell posted by: DragonBait22 (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (6:04 pm) I'd say the best album cover of recent times has to be NOFX's "War on Errorism," but maybe that's just because I don't like Bush. ;) Some other notables include Nirvana's "In Utero" (okay, "Nevermind" had a greater impact, but 'In Utero's" cover is more interesting, I think), The Clash's "London Calling"- epitomizes punk rock, Led Zeppelin's "Houses of the Holy," Green Day's "Dookie," and Smashing Pumpkin's "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" - the sweet celestial images relate wonderfully to the melodic masterpieces of the CDs. posted by: DragonBait22 (reply) post date: 03.30.04 (6:32 pm) Reply to: brogonzo That's an excellent explanation of REM's "Monster" cover. I never really considered it all that impressive of a cover, but the way you described it is impressive, and I guess it really does illustrate the music, in a way. :) posted by: ma763zda (reply) post date: 12.10.07 (3:43 am) c582t |
