A Ship In Port Is Safe, But That's Not What Ships Were Built For...
03.25.04 (3:29 pm)   [edit]
Several readers have commented on not knowing who many of the bands I reference on this page are. There's a fairly good reason for this. The vast majority of music that I listen to is put out by bands who are either on indie labels or who self-produce their own music.

So... how do people find out about independent artists? Well, there are a few ways:

Of course the interenet is a great source. There are lots of people out there writing about independent music, (myself included), and of course, lots of bands promote their stuff on-line.

Personally, however, I think the best way to find out about new music is through word of mouth. I have been very lucky in regards to that. I've been fortunate in so much as people are always introducing me to new music. Just when I think there couldn't possibly any more new genres or bands to discover, someone like Jonathan comes along and opens up a whole new world to me. It's amazing... and I'm so grateful.

So... that's what this list will be about. Spreading the word about new bands that very few people have heard of, but that you think are stellar and deserve some recognition. Just as with the last list, I'll give people a couple of days to make suggestions, and then I will sprinkle it with fairy dust and post our findings.

I am particularly excited about this, because the discovery of new music is one of the most thrilling things I know of. (Yes, I know... I need a life). Ideally, we'll be able to come up with a terrific list of new bands to discover.

Ok... so here are the rules:

 • list as many bands as you want.

 • the band(s) you suggest should still be relatively unknown. (If you're not sure about the obscurity of the band you love, just ask yourself if they can be heard on mainstream radio. If the answer is no... then bring 'em on!)

 • if possible, provide at least a genre for the band (ie: jazz, goth, folk, or in brogonzo's case, hair-metal). If you're not sure about the genre check this out, or just give me a tiny description.

Once again, I have a list of my own in mind, but I'll wait until the end to share those along with yours. In the meantime, I look forward to reading your comments... and thanks again to dragonbait22 who has apparently become my muse.

Let the games begin...

Um, I'd like to suggest Justin Timberlake and Beyonce.

j/k. But I have nothing original to add. I listen to boring old mainstream stuff and don't get out much. ;)

I'll have to think on this one. I always buy cds when I go to shows, but the problem is that the last few shows I've seen were old people like Daniel Ash and he's mainstream. I need to get out more. I'm living in a hotbed of musical talent too. You're inspiring me to open my ears and get back out there.

I have a couple of local Kansas City bands if you like hard rock/heavy metal. My favorite (also friends of mine) is flexible bullit. They have some mp3's on the website at www.flexiblebullit.com. Another one I like is Audio Kombat Arsenal. They are heavier, but have a pretty unique sound. I think they have some mp3's also at www.thearsenal.net. Unfortunately, they just lost their singer. These bands are both great live. Hopefully someday they will become better known! Both links are also on my blog.

I don't know of any new hair-metal bands, but I'd like to mention The Travoltas, a Beach Boys/Punk group who are signed with Fastmusic.

I would have said OAR (Of A Revolution, reggae/rock/folk), but apparently they've just signed with a member of the Evil Empire.

Oh yeah, and Ignite, a political punk group featuring a Hungarian lead singer.

By the way, Meg just sent me a news article about how Bret Michaels (of Poison fame) is now finishing up the details of his new country album, featuring a "down-home" version of "Every Rose has its Thorn."

How cool, I don't think I've ever been anyone's muse before. :)

Here are some of my recommendations:
Aztec Camera- 80s alternative/pop, I suppose, mostly acoustic. Excellent stuff.
Fleming & John- I would say Indie rock, if they are at all classifiable, but they are also considered Christian (and I'm not Christian, so don't let that affect your opinion). Fleming has a very unique and amazing voice and their music is great, though it does take a bit of getting used to.
Big Head Todd & the Monsters- Alternative, some songs border on country (I can't stand country, so don't let that throw you off, either). Very good chill music.
The The- Wonderful 80s rock band, chilling vocals and insightful lyrics.
Nina Simone- a Jazz singer with an incredible voice, very unique.
Hoodoo Gurus- another 80s alternative band, very upbeat with great music and lyrics.

And I'll leave it at that, for now, anyway. ;)

Great topic. I know I could think of more, but my cd's aren't near at hand.... so here are just a few.
I really enjoy Frank Bango... reminds me a bit of Elvis Costello, but just a little.

Kate Rusby.. British Folk. Has an amazing voice.

Ke Only had one album out (Strange World), but it is one I can play over and over. His voice defies description.

Annie Minogue... not Kylie's sister. Another great voice.

I find all sorts of new music on http://www.cdbaby.com which is all independent unsigned artists... or well known artists on independent side projects. I love it because they let you listen to 1-2 minutes of a song and often can hear parts of all the songs on an album. I have found some great cds there. And I love that the artist gets more money per cd than they would through a record label.

I would have to say old school music here for me.
Ramones or the tribute to the Ramones. I like the way it was done. Each band that did a track actually did in their own style. Not the style of the Ramones.
U2's version of Beat on the Brat was great as well as Marilyn Manson's version of The KKK took my Baby Away.
Great Blog

I recommend Alcohol Funnycar. I've seen them a few times and would say their genre is suedo punk. Not as hard and fast paced as Dead Kennedys, but not the typical rock. I also would put Sunny Day Real Estate in this catagory, but don't like them quite as much. I think Sunny Day Real Estate made it on the radio though; so that wouldn't count. Love Codeine, but they've broken up now. Codeine was my other favorate band to see on a fairly regular basis. Codeine is more slow paced; not sure how to describe it. Their Frigid Stars LP was my favorite. http://www.subpop.com/bands/codeine/codeine.html for more Codeine info.

I forgot to mention my very favorite grunge-type band of all time. I don't listen to them unless I am in a particular mood, but still faithfully get their albums. And that is Fugazi. I will never forget the first time I heard Margin Walker or the first time I went to a show of theirs. Good times. Anyhow, they are on my Indie Hit List.

Excellent suggestions! I have to go with jenxer with this one though, Nina was signed to a major label and was QUITE well known in the jazz/blues world. She died last year, however.

Well, I think I was going with lesser known or underappreciated artists, rather than just indie. Big Head Todd was also fairly popular for a little while, but few know of them, same with Sunny Day Real Estate, as jenxer mentioned. :)

I thought of another one. Actually I have thought of many, but some I am not sure if they are so worthy or how far they got in their popularity. Anyhow, this is one I am not sure of, but have been listening to for several years.

Air - I don't know who they are signed with. They are French, I think. They play lounge electronica.

I am going to see them in April for the first time. I can only hope their show is good. I'll have to report back.

As for TW ~ GREAT band, I think I have said on this blog before that I believe "lie in the sound" is one of the most gorgeous songs ever written. Great stuff. Both their CDs are top knotch.
